Past PPFC Meetings - 2000

bullet December 14, 2000: Annual Christmas Potluck. Colorado Lt. Gov. Joe Rogers joined other elected officials and PPFC members for a great potluck. A good time was had by all.

bullet November 9, 2000: "Election Analysis" - David Kopel, Research Director of the Independence Institute and author gave us his analysis on the recent elections and how gun rights will fare in the 2001 Colorado General Assembly. Representative (Senator-elect) Andy McElhany also gave his view on the next session.

bullet September 14, 2000: "The United Nations Gun Control" - Gene Bladock, John Birch Society gave us a brief history of the founding of the UN and its plans for global gun control.

bullet August 10, 2000: "Australian Gun Control" - The Honorable Neil Turner, former member of parliament and transport/agriculture minister from Queensland Australia spoke on the gun control laws enacted in Australia after the Port Arthur massacre. He opposed those laws and gave an impassioned speech on the floor of parliament (read his remarks ). More than 115 members and guests listened to his humorous stories about Australia and the serious loss of freedom the law abiding citizens suffered. He also gave us some statistics that showed that violent crimes actually increased after the gun control laws went into effect. Colorado State Representative and Senator Elect Andy McElhany fielded questions about the recent primary elections. The hat was passed to help Republican candidate Mark Cloer in his race in House District 17. We collected $528. Mark is fighting an anti-gun Democrat.

bullet July 13, 2000: "Jury Nullification" - Fully Informed Jury Association Alex Daubé told us about the rights of jury members. With the legislatures making senseless laws and judges being appointed by liberal, antigun governors and presidents, the fully informed jury is our last hope for true justice system.

bullet June 8, 2000: "Legislative Update" - Colorado State House Majority Leader (and likely new Speaker of the House) Representative Doug Dean gave us his impressions on how the 2000 legislative sessions went, what he sees next session, and some insight on the November elections. Representative Dean is a strong supporter of our rights.

The panelists explained the goal of Project Exile is to target violent felons who use a firearm in the commission of a crime, prior felons who possess a firearm, and drug dealers who possess a firearm. BATF Agent Marianos explained the priority of his office is to go after the "bad guys," not the lawful gun owner who may commit a technical mistake. This was a very informative presentation.

Betty gave us the dates for the various activities leading up to the November general election. After her presentation, we held a practice caucus and county assembly.
We have set up an Elections 2000 page on our Web site which lists important telephone number and dates and candidates for the various offices.

bullet January 13, 2000: Colorado Springs Police Chief Lorne Kramer gave us his views on gun and crime control. He does not support any new gun laws except for back ground checks on all purchases at gun shows. He supports concealed carry but would like to see it standardized throughout the state. He supports increased penalty for committing a felony with a firearm and a program that would catch and prosecute felons who attempt to buy or possess a firearm. Chief Kramer was asked about the Colorado Springs Firearms Registration program which requires an FFL to file a form with the Police Department for every gun sold. He said this information is only used to check for stolen firearms and is not provided to anyone else. He is going to verify that and get back to us.
